This is comparatively old webernet news, but I finally saw these Japanese anatomy scrolls, and as a fan of macabre medical illustrations (I loves me my Mütter Museum), they’re quite compelling. (The blog post in turn links to the original files on a Japanese website.)

I can say with confidence, that my stomach turns when I look at these sort of macabre things, but I look. To me, this is more gruesome than the Bodies exhibit, why? Well for one the exhibit doesn’t have skin dangling off the body, just the thought of someone methodically slicing through skin makes my stomach turn, but because these drawings were made in 1819, I am much more impressed by the physical, and spatial work that went into them considering the times, and the instruments available to doctors, or pathologists at the time.
Thanks!
